What Bibi should tell Obama: His own words 20 years ago

What Bibi should tell Obama: His own words 20 years ago

"Blessings from Hebron" - David Wilder

In the spring of 1994, the Israeli government, then led by Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin, pondered dismantling the Hebron Jewish community, uprooting and expelling its Jewish residents.

The Hebron Jewish Community sponsored a 'Night to Honor Hebron' in Jerusalem.

Exactly 20 years ago. One of the keynote speakers was then the leader of the opposition, the Chairman of the Likud, Binyamin Netanyahu. He spoke for just over five minutes.

Here is a video of that speech and a translation into English. I would suggest the the present day Prime Minister, Mr. Binyamin Netanyahu, use the same text while speaking, later today, to the President of the United States in the White House:

Rabbis, former PM Shamir, MK Rafael Eitan, MKs, dear audience, holy audience, I lately read a book called the History of the Jews, written by a non-Jew, Paul Johnson and this is how it begins.

'If you want to understand the rock upon which sits the Jewish people, go to Hebron, because there you will understand the secret of the existence of the Jewish people.'

What this non-Jew understands, the Israeli government today
doesn’t understand, but we understand.

We know that thousands of years ago Avraham Avinu requested to bury his wife Sarah in Kiryat Arba, that is, Hebron. He went to Efron the Hittite, and requested to buy Ma’arat HaMachpela and Efron said, here, take it. But Avraham said, no, I want to buy it, to which Efron suggested the not too humble price of 400 silver shekels. And Avraham paid the full price in order to purchase a grave plot for him and his sons and his wife and his son’s wives, and for the sakes of those who would come after them. Avraham understood fully what would happen as the story continued. He fully understood that there would be demands on the Maara and the city surrounding it and he wanted that the purchase, and it’s legal contract would not be due to someone’s mercy and charity, rather by right, by merit.

And he was correct because today the Arabs come and demand, ‘Ma’arat HaMachpela is ours’ and ‘Hebron is ours’ and over all those years, nations came, the Babylonians, and the Kasdim, the Greeks and the Romans, the Byzantines, the Muslims, and all, one after the other, tried to expel us, to uproot us from Hebron, and again and again, we returned, and again and again we resettled and reestablished ourselves.

And now, comes the government, a Jewish government, who forgot who is Avraham Avinu, who forgot the payment made to Efron the Hittite, who forgot the struggles for generations, who forgot the rock upon which sits Am Yisrael, who forgot Israel’s heritage, and the eternal values of Israel, without which we have no existence, and now this government comes and talks about uprooting Jews from Hebron.

I want to tell you something, we are in Hebron due to the strength of merit, but we are also there by the merit of strength, the power of faith, the power of settlement, and holding on to the land, holding on to our heritage.  We are in Hebron, and I say this in front of the Mayor of Jerusalem, Mr. Ehud Olmert, Jerusalem, our city, we are in Hebron and we are in Jerusalem and we are at all places in Eretz Yisrael because of the strength of our merit and the merits of our strength, both are important, both are essential and we will not give up either of them, not on the merit and not on the strength to defend that merit.

And I tell you, because this struggle continues, and seemingly hasn’t yet been decided, but it has been decided, it’s been decided because within Am Yisrael, the faith and the inner strength, and fearlessness, is ours, and when this present government wanted to uproot the ancient Jewish community of Hebron, we went, the friends sitting here, we went together to the Prime Minister and told him, if your try to do it, you’ll find all of us there, every Jew, with a Jewish heart beating, will be there in order to guard that rock of eternal Israel. Without a past we have no future, and we will guard our past in order to ensure our future, a future for all Am Yisrael in all Eretz Yisrael, and at its head, Hebron,

That is our message from this place to all Am Yisrael and to all the peoples of the world. Hebron is ours, Jerusalem is ours, Eretz Yisrael is ours.

Thank you very much.
